Yellowstone National Park

Name: 40. Mud Volcano
Address:
Description: The very entrance of Mud- Volcano Area gives an indication of pungent sulfur odor combined with the continued splash and uproar. Out of many mud volcanoes such as Mud Geyser, Sizzling Basin, Churning Caldron, Grizzly Fumarole, and Dragon’s Mouth Spring; Mud volcano is the most impressive as namesake. In 1870, explorers were amazed to see the Mud Volcano spewing mud into surrounding treetops and creating tremor in the ground at every eruption. It is only after two year that the Mud Volcano transformed into a pool of bubbling, muddy water as to be seen today. After walking along the trail, the intermittent uproar in Dragon’s Mouth reminds the visitors of fairy tales dragons who symbolized death and terror. Actually, a park visitor gave it a matching name somewhere around 1912. Sulfur Caldron which can be viewed on the other side of the river from the road has been identified as highly acidic springs in the park area.
Mud Volcano area is also a good vista to overlook the natural playground of wildlife in the Hayden Valley where deer, bison, elk, and moose herds graze along the Yellowstone meadows and grizzly, black bear, and wolves wait for their opportune time to prey. In the swallow and slow-moving river waters; birds such as bald eagles, ospreys and pelicans are found busy catching their prey and bird species such as Canada geese and mallards look for under water plants.
