The Bootleg Canyon Recreation Area (BCRA) includes approximately 2,400 acres of land owned by the City of Boulder City. The complex is located in the River Mountain Range and includes most of what locally is referred to as Red Mountain and part of Black Mountain. Bootleg Canyon got its name from the stills operated by bootleggers during the Great Depression. During the years 1937-1938, the Civilian Conservation Corps built several hiking trails in the River Mountains as a public works project to improve recreational opportunities surrounding the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
During the 1990’s mountain biking realized a boom in popularity and was accepted by Boulder City as an additional recreational use in Bootleg Canyon. Some segments of the original CCC trails have become part of the mountain bike trail system but other additional trails have been built. Presently, there are around 35 miles of mountain biking trails and now has an International reputation among the mountain biking community as one of the best mountain biking complexes in the world. The area is considered an “epic’ ride by the International Mountain Biking Association.
In addition to the mountain biking and hiking trails, the City has constructed a mountain bike trailhead, restroom building with showers and a parking lot near the mouth of Bootleg Canyon.
Flightlines: The Bootleg Canyon Flightlines was completed in July 2008 and has become a major attraction. It is touted as the best aerial experience anywhere in the world. Flightlines are engineered zip lines. Instead of hiking or cycling down the trails, you are exploring the mountain from the air. Add to that some of the safest new patented technology, spectacular views, and highly qualified and trained guides and you have Bootleg Canyon Flightlines, the only Aerial Trail system in Nevada. The trails include an 833 ft training line and four different runs, each one containing four lines - ranging from 833 feet to 2,552 feet. Each tour takes up to 2.5 hours.
Full training is given including a ride on the practice run. The practice run gives anyone having second thoughts a chance to back out before being committed to the full tour experience. After the practice run, groups of approximately 12 guests are shuttled up to the top of Red Mountain with commanding views of the Las Vegas Valley, Lake Mead, Boulder City and the Eldorado Valley. There riders begin the descent on the series of four lines (1.56 miles) flying across canyons at speeds of up to 50 mph. |
