Yosemite National Park by Alan O'Neill

Name: 28. Swinging Bridge (Yosemite Valley)
Address:
Description: Swinging Bridge (Yosemite Valley): This is a great place to view Yosemite Falls and the Merced River. Although glaciers ended their work here over 14,000 years ago, Yosemite remains a dynamic place. The Merced River continues to shape this valley. Following the ancient river channel, a series of glaciers shaped this canyon. When the glaciers melted, they left behind piles of rock that had been plucked from the cliff wall and carried along in the river of ice. These piles are called moraines. The moraine left behind following the most recent glacial activity dammed the Merced River near Bridalveil Falls. As the glacier melted, a shallow lake formed which eventually filled in with small rocks and sediment. This accounts for the flat valley floor we see today. On January 2, 1997, floodwaters covered the parking lot here to a depth of 6 feet.
